Aloe Vera ResearchModern clinical use of aloe vera gel began in the 1930's. It was reportedly
used to successfully treat x-ray and radium burns. After that studies using
laboratory animals were done, however much of the work suffered from poor
experimental design, and test sample sizes that were too small. However, new
experimental work has indicated the possibility of distinct physiological
effects. Although many physiological properties of the gel have been described,
there is no certain correlation between these and the identified gel components. Recently it has been found that the sticky fluid found inside the leaves of aloe vera can help preserve organ function after massive blood loss. Dr. Mitchell Fink, a university researcher, said "Soldiers wounded in combat often lose significant amounts of blood, and there is no practical way to replace the necessary amount of blood fast enough on the front lines. When this happens, there is inadequate perfusion of the organs which quickly leads to a cascade of life-threatening events." Research has found that mucilage from inside aloe leaves is rich in sugar compounds called polysaccharides that affect the qualities of fluid.
