Aloe Vera Pill

In November of 2004, the FTC launched the “Big Fat Lie” Initiative which targets bogus weight-loss claims. It is a nation-wide law enforcement sweep against six companies making false weight-loss claims in national advertisements.

Unfortunately aloe vera and pills are involved in some of the complaints being launched by Big Fat Lie. One of the companies sued was Femina Inc, sold the 1-2-3 Reduce Fat kit which includes Xena RX, a diet pill that purportedly contains green tea extract, and the Magic gel purportedly contains aloe vera and sea algae.  The FTC took specific issue with their claim that "the aloe vera and seaweed gel eliminates inches of fat."

Operation Big Fat Lie was designed by the Commission to do the following:

Doctors, dieticians, and other experts agree that the best way to lose weight is to eat fewer calories and increase your physical activity so you burn more energy. A reasonable goal is to lose about a pound a week. For most people, that means cutting about 500 calories a day from your diet, eating a variety of nutritious foods, and exercising regularly.

Weighing The Evidence In Diet Ads

  • stop deceptive advertising
  • provide refunds to consumers harmed by unscrupulous weight-loss advertisers
  • encourage media outlets not to carry advertisements containing bogus weight-loss claims
  • educate consumers to be on their guard against companies promising miraculous weight loss without diet or exercise.

Complaints against each of the six companies allege that defendants used at least one of the seven bogus weight-loss claims that are part of the FTC’s “Red Flag” education campaign announced in December 2003. That ongoing Red Flag campaign provides guidance to assist media outlets in voluntarily screening out weight-loss ads that contain claims that are too good to be true.

Here are the seven claims that the FTC warns against:

  • "Lose weight without diet or exercise!" - Reality: All you'll lose is money.
  • “Lose weight no matter how much you eat of your favorite foods!” - Reality: Losing weight requires sensible food choices. Filling up on healthy vegetables and fruits can make it easier to say no to fattening sweets and snacks.
  • “Lose weight permanently! Never diet again!” - Reality: Don’t trust any product that promises once-and-for-all results without ongoing maintenance.
  • “Block the absorption of fat, carbs, or calories!” - Reality: Doctors, dieticians, and other experts agree that there’s simply no magic non-prescription pill that will allow you to block the absorption of fat, carbs, or calories.
  • “Lose 30 pounds in 30 days!” - Reality: At best, products promising lightning-fast weight loss are false. At worst, they can ruin your health.
  • “Everybody will lose weight!” - Reality: There is simply no one-size-fits-all product guaranteed to work for everyone.
  • “Lose weight with our miracle diet patch or cream!” - Reality: There’s nothing you can wear or apply to your skin that will cause you to lose weight.
